Abstract

The fact is recognized graddually that many women experience discomforts during premenstrual, menstrual period. The purpose of this study is to provide basic data of primary health care through health education, information supply, exercise prescription, dietary guidance.
Data were collected from July 24 to August 16, 1997 from 130 university women in one Women¢¥s University in Seoul. Using the self-report questionnaire, the meaning of men- struation, premenstrual, menstrual discomforts, discomfort solution methods were investigated, then the contents which subjects write down were categorized.
College women were perceived menstruation positively as signal of maturity, reproduction, preparation process and show acceptable attitude toward menstruation. They complain of physical discomfort frequently. Physical discomforts were pain, fatigue, water retention, change of dietary habit. Psychological discomforts were irritation, nervous temperament, anxiety, fretfulness, depression, feeling of unpleasant, keenness and they can not control emotions. Social discomforts were restriction of activity, taking precaution, limitation of clothing, evading personal relations, restraint of going out and show withdrawal pattern. The method to solve these discomforts, college women take active means as sleeping/rest, maintenance of physical deanness, choosing proper clothing and positive attitude, taking drugs, conversion therapy.
College vtomen perceived menstruation positively, and experience various physical, psychological, social discomforts. They take active methods to solve these discomforts.
